A year of breakthroughs, visibility & meaningful progress
⭐The Code is finally under review!⭐
There is no federal legislation for animal research in Australia, just a set of guidelines (called ‘The Code’). These guidelines are extremely outdated and in urgent need of review. And after years of persistent lobbying, the NHMRC has finally agreed to review them.
The Code review is our biggest win of 2025, and we will kick off the new year formulating our submission to the consultation. This is the closest thing to legislative change for animals in research and demonstrative of the system now shifting. 🙌
A Louder National Voice
- Multiple podcast appearances – Animal Rights the Debate, The Vegan Compass, Science Behind the Glass and four of our own podcasts episodes to tune into
- Radio interviews
- Guest speaking across Australia – The Animal Rights Forum, Animal Liberation Supporter Webinar, Monash Vegan Society and more

Greater Awareness
During World Week for Animals in Laboratories, we ran an awareness campaign that earned nearly 1M impressions! Huge reach = huge impact.

New Opinion Poll
We commissioned another Opinion Poll to see what Australians know about animal research and the alternatives, and how they feel about it. We were happy to see that the overwhelming majority of Australians support NAMs, rehabilitation for primates, and mandatory reporting of animal use and statistics
Crucial Policy and Investigative Publications
Political Lobbying
We met with MPs, ministers and advisors to bring the plight of animals in research to the political agenda. In addition, we also published our:
- Political toolkit
- Information packs on primate research, sent to all Australian MPs and Ministers, urging for review of official primate guidelines
Events and Education
- A range of webinars with leading experts in various fields, ranging from fish sentience through to biobanking
- Presentations and sponsorship at nation-wide conferences, including the highly regarded ANZZCART conference, One Welfare Shared Futures Symposium, the Association for Interdisciplinary Meta-research & Open Science (AIMOS) conference and the Monash Organoid Symposium
- Community events to build awareness and support, featuring (among others) the esteemed Dr Andrew Knight, Monash Vegan Society and an exclusive film night fundraiser.
